How Popular is Aquatic Exercise? How Often do People Participate?
One of the greatest needs expressed by the press is a quick resource base for statistics on aquatic therapy. So, just for you, Aquaticnet.com has gathered information from sources as varied as the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid, the National Swimming Pool Foundation and state bathing codes.

Question: How popular is aquatic exercise in the United States?
Answer: There are several surveys available which address popularity of aquatic exercise. There are even more addressing the popularity of swimming. Many of these sources are cited below.
Per American Sports Data, approximately 5.8 million people in the US participated in aquatic exercise (year studied 2004). There was a 33% increase in participation from 2003-2004 in aquatic exercise participation. Source: www.americansportsdata.com
The breakdown for geographic regions of the United States was as follows:
Northeast – 651,000;
North Central – 1.35 million;
